06.16 - colliding vectors

on the road by 7am.  i was excited, nearing the finish.  i would likely make fortuna by noon, suzi around 7.  i still had some residual anxiousness regarding the bike.  the tires had held air overnight but i topped them off just to be sure.

quiet morning communing with the giants.

the eel river.  you could see how it got the name.  the river has been prone to flooding, 1964 being the mega flood.  i believe it requires considerable snow melt, of which there is very little these last years.

and into fortuna and, yes, you guessed it, a beer at the eel river brewery

day 5 - into flagstaff, 05.19

Oy, what a day.  but a reassuring one in that challenges were overcome.  everything worked out in the end. there was no way this day was going to be anything but drudgery.  80+ miles to flagstaff, all on interstate shoulder, into the wind, with nothing to look at but flat, semi-arid land.  just something you have to do to get to point 'b'.  my plan was to take 2 days, doing as much as possible today.  the forecast was for mild wind in the morning, building to 15-20 mph in afternoon.  tomorrow was going to start at 13 and build to 20-25 with gusts above 30.  the same the following day. and the shower, meal and rest at the KOA campground did me good.  i was off by 6:15 with a pint of chocolate milk.  wind stayed mild and i was 'standing on a corner in winslow, arizona' by 9:00. actually, i was in a coffee house talking with steve, the owner, and petting hope, guiness' stand in.  i should mention that arizona does not recognize DST, so time is funny here, t

06.09 - climbing to tahoe

we left lake topaz by 8:00 focused on its being maurice's last day, culminating with the 2,300 foot climb to lake tahoe.  it caught us a little by surptise that we had a long climb out of the basin.  one more mountain pass, but more like big hills. in the distance the the sierra. maurice had recovered really well by now.  we were both a little sore from the climbing the last few days, but had faith that would work itself out as we rode. we rode 15 miles through nevada countryside.  more sage.  i've seen an awful lot of sage brush these last three weeks, varying density and size as the only change, but now there were mixes of junipers and small (pinyon?) pines.  obviously there was water in this area.  we passed a sign indicating we were entering the carson river watershed.  small farms started appearing scattered in the valley.   there were small sections hinting at the fires that have plagued the west. then we reached walmart.  a

05.24, on the road again.

i was nervous about starting out again, worrying about whether the issue with the bike had been truly resolved or not.   vegas is 220 miles from williams, 3-4 days ride.  a good chunk on the interstate.  much of it downhill with a 1,600 foot drop right outside of williams.  i'm altering my route a little and staying on the interstate till kingman, not taking the rte 66 loop up to the north.  looking at camping arrangements, i will stop in seligman the first night, only 45 mi.  good to ease into riding again.  that will leave me about 75 mi to kingman, before turning nw another 75 to lake mead outside vegas.  i actually need to slow down a bit as it works out, since maurice won't be in till saturday.  i'll reach lake mead on wed evening.  so two additional nights to kill.  probably spend a second night at lake mead, might try to get an extra night at our vegas hotel. riding was easy today, mostly downhill with a little wind in the afternoon but nothin
